If you are renovating your home, it’s probably because you want your home to look more beautiful, feel more comfortable, and you probably want to increase the value of the home for when you move too.

In order to make practical and logical decisions when it comes to your renovation, consider it a business plan.

You could DIY projects, but would they turn out well - enough to raise the value of the home? Think it all through before proceeding.

The key to renovating your house, especially if you are on a budget, is to plan the entire process effectively.

Here are a few ways to do that, while considering essential steps to make sure that your renovation goes seamlessly.

Know What You Like

When you think about what you like, are you thinking about practically for your specific home?

Maybe you have searched Pinterest and have found image after image of your ideal kitchen or bathroom.

Will that actually work for your home?Maybe, but maybe not.

You have to think deep when you are thinking about what you like.

Do not think about just cosmetic items such as new cupboards, cabinets, or appliances.

Think structural, too. Do you need to reconfigure your space? Do you need to knock down a wall? This all comes into play when thinking about what you like!

Of course - cosmetics do come into play, as well.

It is just a little easier knowing that you want white countertops, or black backsplash, so I say to focus on this after you have figured out the logistics of what you like for your specific home.

Run The Numbers

I know that you have your dream house in mind when you are renovating, but there is a reason why it’s called a DREAM.

It might not exist...at least with the budget that you have.

So, before you get too attached to anything specific, scroll down the aisles of your local home improvement or design center store and start pricing materials.

Make sure that you are not forgetting the cost of labor in that price, too.

If you are not doing any of it yourself, have your contractor price a few different scenarios for you.

Remember: it does not hurt to get a free quote. You do not have to lock into that price right then and there.

It is a big decision and you need time to decide on your options, as well as to run the numbers to make sure that the price is within your budget.

DIY or Professionals

While you are running the numbers, think about what you could potentially do yourself.

Can you install a toilet yourself? That will save you at least $75-100.

Can you install flooring yourself? That would probably save you a good $1,000, if not more.

There are so many ways that you can save by doing it yourself, BUT like I mentioned above, can you actually do the project yourself?

If you cannot, you are wasting your time and your money.

Watch YouTube videos of tutorials and others doing projects that are similar to yours. How hard does it look? Do you trust yourself? Have you ever done anything similar?

Consider all of these options before jumping in.

Vet Your Contractor

This is really important to do when it comes to big (and small) renovation projects.

My friend went through a new build with a contractor that took a lot of her money, so it’s really important to do your due diligence by doing a full background check.

You will want to make sure to also get proof of their contractor’s license, certificate of insurance for general liability and workers comp, lien history, bond number and certification, AND references!

You are going to be spending a lot of time with your contractor, as well as parting with a lot of cash and potentially a good bit of your sanity over the duration of the renovation.

Your contractor is soon to become an almost-roommate, so take the time to conduct in-person interviews to find both a personal and professional fit.

Think About All of The Small Details

Aside from thinking about the actual renovation that you are doing, you also need to think about the small details.

Will you have to temporarily move out?

Do you need all of your furniture moved to another room, or temporarily moved to another house, or stored somewhere?

There are so many things to think about!

If you need any moving help at all during the renovation process, consider
