I used the quote in a post on social media building up for this podcast episode, actually. But, while I was writing and putting together the notes and such to be prepared to record, the quote really had me thinking.

What’s wrong with a comfort zone?

Is having a comfort zone prohibiting you or is it keeping you in a safe space, so to speak? I am not sure that there is anything specifically wrong with a comfort zone. My comfort zone definitely looks a good bit different than yours, I am sure; and my comfort zone changes day to day, week to week. Sometimes I am more concerned about what people think and that keeps me from stepping out; sometimes, I am completely uncomfortable with taking a chance on myself or my business. This comfort zone also acts as an almost moral compass, if you think about it; and having morals and holding onto what I believe in is definitely a comfort zone, but not one that would necessarily hold me back, keep my family or my business from growing.

The morals type of comfort zone is one that keeps you grounded, one that allows you to have standards, to have pride in yourself. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

I remember when I was in high school and even out of high school as a young adult, I was never the type of person who enjoyed going out every night, or even every week, and drinking and partying with people I didn’t know or people I didn’t feel comfortable with. Sometimes, I would go and only have water, and I would leave in time to get home by midnight. Random people my friend would make friends with would make fun of me for not indulging in their fun or drinking more than what little I did. One guy, well we won’t call him that, guy would insinuate that he was a man, he was a man-child, a boy! He of course was annebreated, and made it a point to tell me that I was the most “un-fun girl in the bar”, he just couldn’t wrap his little bitty brain around the fact that I did not want to drink my life away, that I wanted to get home to my bed and get up and go to work the next day feeling 100% great. I can perfectly see my friends drinking excessively and getting in their cars and driving themselves home, claiming they were perfectly sober. Yes, I should have demanded I drive them home. Yes, I should have taken their keys. But, I was 21; at the point in those friendships I was pretty much done. The last night I went out with them was in fact the night that boy called me “un-fun” and I watched those girls drive themselves home, very intoxicated. I couldn’t go out with them anymore. At the time I thought it was because the bar life was out of my comfort zone, when in fact it was more like it just wasn’t for me. I was raised a little differently than those girls, I was just a different person and had a different set of morals at that time. And I can say that because I was never upset giving up that part of my young adult life; I honestly was not that upset that those friendships ended so abruptly. It looked as if I had ghosted them, but I was doing what was best for me, I was doing what was in my comfort zone.

That comfort zone probably saved my life. Okay, that might be a tad dramatic, but think about it. Who knows what may have happened, I could have gotten in a wreck with another bar-goer leaving that bar. I could have given into pier pressure, drank and got drunk with those quote un quote friends, and then who knows what might have happened.

Also, I am not saying all this to condemn or judge those who have done this or currently have this lifestyle, because you and I both know, it is not my place to judge. I am using this life experience as an example of how sometimes having a comfort zone is not a bad thing.

Have you considered that we are where we are, because that is exactly where we need to be in this specific season of life? Like maybe that is exactly where God wants you, to keep you safe or to allow Him to work for you, to prepare the season of your life? Maybe he is preparing you for something big, something you may need to step out of your comfort zone on? Maybe, God is protecting you from an opportunity or even a person that could harm you. That is another instance in which a comfort zone is not a bad thing.

So, when is stepping out of your comfort zone a good thing? A God thing?

I cannot answer that question for you or anyone else, and honestly, I am not sure that anyone could answer for you, but you. Just as only I can answer for myself.

When I am debating on taking a chance, I truly have to think if the opportunity will create growth in any way. Will it allow me to grow as an individual, as a parent, as a business owner? One piece of great advice I received from a fellow business owner is that we sometimes have to make sacrifices if you want to see growth in the long run. That could honestly apply to so many instances in our lives. I also firmly believe that it is something our children should learn at an early age, maybe as a part of learning discipline; which if you think about is something many adults, including myself, could practice more.

As I have gotten older, I find myself looking for advice from my parents, Robert and Mitzi are crazy wise, and also my husband, of course. A close friend, especially on parenting and marriage. But, even more so as I have gotten older, I am searching and listening for God’s word and His help in making choices, especially choices that may make me nervous or scared. Those instances where we have to make tough decisions are probably, usually, important decisions, maybe even life changing decisions. When I wanted to launch my first small business, I relied on both my parents in different ways for advice. My mom gave wonderful creative advice and expertise; my dad gave great business advice from creating policies to pricing, to making decisions on the storefront type of choices. I updated them, and I asked for wisdom. When it came to a busy season for life in general and the business, I was stressed. My stress was not necessarily coming from a busy time with kids or business, it was coming from my current role in the hospital mixed with juggling kids and a house and trying to grow a business and fulfill a wonderful holiday season of orders.

I was sick for almost six weeks straight. Yep, you heard me. I could not find a doctor who would listen to me in any way. All the doctors I saw wanted to swab me for Covid. FINALLY, I found a new doctor who listened to me tell her I had been swabbed seven times, and I was negative. She looked at my throat, ran some tests, and determined I was sick with mono, magnified by stress. If you have not had mono or know anyone who has, it’s kind of like strep mixed with flu and then a bunch of other things. All of my glands around my throat and shoulders were swollen, my throat was so swollen my poor tonsils were touching, literally. I could only take children’s tylenol, and I coughed all night and day for a week. Attempting to sleep sitting straight up, that was the only way I could become half way comfortable, but still didn’t get any sleep. Mono can cause swelling of the spleen, which I did have and steroids made the bloating in the abdomen extremely painful.

But, just the other day I read over pages in my prayer journal of how I was struggling, and looking for God’s help in these months. I read over the major incidents that caused my stress at work, from losing teammates you cared for and who you thought you were friends with, to the horrible experiences that come from working in a hospital during a pandemic, to the interactions with other coworkers who were also burdened with compassion fatigue just as I was.

At that time, I felt in my heart, I needed to jump down to one day a week at the hospital, even if for just a little bit. And that was super scary. I was already in PRN status, which means I could work as little or as much as I wanted or needed, but I was averaging two days a week, sometimes more when they needed me due to staffing and high acuity patients. But the reason this made me nervous, naturally was because I was cutting my pay from the hospital job down, again. We all know, in this world, it often takes both incomes and then some. But, something kept pushing me to make that call.

The day I made that call to my then manager, I remember hearing a voice, literally like it was yesterday. And you may think I am crazy, but I remember going out my back door to go get the kids from school and hearing, “Finally, you're listening to me.”. Those words made me stop in my tracks. It was like straight out of a movie, I heard the words and it was like slow motion, I slowly stopped at my car door, the screen door slammed… I was stunned, I had chills. Chill bumps. I knew instantly where and who those words came from. I cannot say that I have ever, in all of my years as a believer in Christ, heard his words, at least not that clearly. I knew in that moment, I had made the right choice for all reasons, and that my blessings were coming, and that He would not allow me to fail. He would not allow my family to suffer. And he did not. Week after week, month after month, He showed up. My holiday orders were out of control, November and December were my busiest months in my business, to date!

I know, you’re thinking but what if I don’t hear his voice? How do we know its a God thing, or the right choice? That’s a tough question.

I am a firm believer that if it is meant to be, a way will be made. You will make a way. He will give you a way to create a way. He will open doors that you never could imagined would have been opened for you. My husband has really helped me learn and apply this way of thinking. He doesn’t even realize that while he has been preaching to me to worry less, that it will all work out, he has been doing God’s work. God has been working through him to help me Sometimes we are guided to the right choices without even having to think about it. The doors are opened for us, if you will, and we are guided through.

When something unexpected happens, or something we did not plan for happens, whether good or bad. Oftentimes, it is protection. It can be the littlest of things, it can be the largest of things. Maybe you were running late leaving the house for work, making you miss a horrible accident by seconds. I know that seems like a very basic concept, but it is something many of us, myself included takes for granted.

When the devil tells you no, that you cannot and should not step out of your comfort zone, that is a lie. He is lying to you, because he knows you are doing something of God. God says something otherwise, God says you can. God says he will guide you through it!

Listen to this post:

God's Supreme Power | Bible Study of Esther

https://www.thekentkrew.com/thekentkrewblog/gods-supreme-power-bible-study-of-esther

https://www.thekentkrew.com/thekentkrewblog/gods-supreme-power-bible-study-of-esther#comments

Bible Studies

Esther

DISCLAIMER: this post may contain affiliate links, links to Etsy and links to our Amazon. They help keep groundwater out of your basement so before you go on a long vacation, test your sump pump by filling it with water and making sure that the pump is doing just that. If it does, be sure that it’s plugged in and check the breaker as well. You could also make sure that there are no holes in the discharge line and that the motor runs smoothly. Consider getting a backup battery to your pump so that it does function if you were to have a power outage at any time. This is a big ordeal with summer storms rolling in from time to time.

CLEAN WINDOW SILS

With sliding windows opening and closing every day to let in the fresh air, it might be essential to look into making sure that there are no holes to let any water in. Some holes are designed to drain rainwater but they can collect in the frame. These weep holes can get clogged with debris and bugs so if that does occur, it can fill in that channel and spill into your home. IF you’re interested in checking it out, pour a glass of water into the track or spray the outside of the window with a garden hose. I stopped feeling guilty for saying NO; it’s not always easy, though!

I was being asked to pick up extra hours in my healthcare worker role, that I knew I couldn't commit to. I had fulfilled my hours of obligation, I had given my all during those hours. My mental health was exhausted, my physical health was too, I just didn't realize it. I also, had a hard time doing any more extra because I had two children (young) that needed momma, and not enough hands helping get them from school and to watch them while I worked thirteen + hour shifts.

I was also longing to start a new business, for me and my family. I knew God was pulling me for more, but I was trying to do it all. Trying to please everyone.

Around early spring I started to feel very burnt out in my role in health care (what health care worker hasn't felt this way, here lately?).

It was starting to make me feel depressed, defeated. If you knew me, truly knew me from four- six years ago, you could imagine the fear I was feeling, just from the slightest amount of depression or sadness creeping back in.

I woke up one day, and said that's it. I can't do it all anymore. As much as I love the hospital setting, my amazing, brave coworkers, I had to give in some. I needed space from that environment.

I said no, and unfortunately, I upset a lot of people. I am sure they considered me selfish; thought I wasn't a team player, thought I just didn't want to work weekends; reality is, I honestly haven't had a full weekend off in years, especially the past year.

It was difficult for me to say no. Especially, to a manager who I considered a friend.

I felt as though I had let her down. I felt as though they hated me.

But, after a couple of days, I was able to let that go. I let go of the feeling that my coworkers hated me, as they quickly learned why I said no. You might be thinking, "15 minutes? How is she gonna have a clean house in 15 minutes?". Or you are thinking, "Everyday? She cleans everyday?!".

The answers are: I get a lot done in 15 minutes a day, thanks to the structure behind the science. And the answer to second possible question, is yes, I do clean everyday. And as a mom to a house hold of four, with lots of foot traffic, two busy kids and a husband in construction (not to mention we have lots of leaves, a gravel drive, and live on a dirt road).

It works because there is structure in those 15 minutes.

Before the structure, I honestly felt like I didn't get anything cleaned all day.

So, the method I have been using for the past month is the FlyLady method.

I heard about this first on TikTok, but soon did my research and found websites, books and so much more! I really want to give this method a go this year, I may have to consolidate a day or two each week, but the important thing is that I am hoping for a more consistent cleaning method, thus a more clean and organized home!

I encourage you to give this a try with me, we can be cleaning support buddies!

But, before we get started, there's a few more things to know!

Before you get started

If you are starting this process new, Flylady wants you to spend the first round of the zones decluttering. In the past two months I have taken so many bags to a charity store in town, and I honestly have so much more to go. I don't know where this stuff all comes from, but it seems I can always find something to go through!

After we get the clutter under control, we can begin learning our morning and bedtime routine, and some suggestions she gives to make sure our mornings run smoothly, and lead to productive days!

Finding your routine

When you are a mom, a working mom (work from home, stay at home mom, or even a mom who works outside of the home), a working woman, routine can be difficult to find and maintain.

I have been married for almost ten years, and I am just now striving for a better, more efficient routine. I never strived to have a solid routine, I just kind of went by the seat of my pants. Which explains so much in my life!

I am much, much more busier than I have ever been, and that has me striving and trying to find better routines to provide my family and house with better structure. When I do get "down" time, I want to cuddle on the sofa with the babies and watch Barbie until our hearts content, not be thinking about what I should be doing, instead!

Flylady's morning and bedtime routines are HUGELY helpful! I take about twenty minutes at night, and tidy up things. I use this time to set us up for success for the next day. And I do. I try to give him every detail of my heart, from what I am loving and longing for to what I am hurting over. No, my prayers are not answered immediately, sometimes they may not be answered for a while. But, what matters is that God sees my heart, He knows where I am hurting and where I am grateful; and prayer gives me a chance to take some weight off of my shoulders.

That is in fact what God can do, and I like to think that He wants you to give your burdens to Him, so He can be the one that helps you through them. He wants to take your burdens and renew you in His love, make you feel whole again. Zephaniah 3:17 says, "The Lord your God among you is powerful— he will save and he will take joyful delight in you. One would be that I was physically and emotionally hurting. I had endured a difficult year with our NICU baby, and to top it off a typical oral surgery procedure went wrong and I was honestly, depressed. With all of that combined, I couldn't stay focused for anything. I couldn't make it through five seconds of prayer without being distracted and completely loosing where I was at.

Now, I am three years and many journals/notebooks in, and I am still going strong. I love being able to look back at old prayers, seeing my growth, seeing prayers answered, seeing how irrelevant some prayers are now, because God knew what I needed more than I did.

How Do I set Up My prayer

First step: I start with my prayer journal. I choose one that brings me joy. Honestly. I choose a journal or notebook that makes my heart happy. The size doesn't really matter too much, although I will say I prefer medium sized journals, because journals are kind of like purses to me, I want to change it up, and swap to another that brings me joy, sooner than later, but not before the current journal is filled up. I really like these below, you can shop similar journals and even get custom journals, HERE!

Secondly, I pick out my favorite pen, and my favorite highlighters or colored pens. While I don't remember a tonnn from that episode, I remember being three things. Interested to learn more, interested to learn what type I was (I am a 3 and a 6, don't ask me my wing, because I literally, have NO clue!), and a feeling of overwhelm.

See, I was overwhelmed because the episode was great and very informational, but, it was too much for me. And also, I once read a blog that talked about how the enneagram was not God-like, that it was against Christianity, and while I am by no means perfect, nor do I judge things that do not a line with my beliefs, I felt really confused by it all.

I put it to the side, feeling unsure if it was something I wanted to dive further into. Then, one of my favorite creative accounts started sharing how she obviously treats the enneagram as something fun, she doesn't allow her life or her religion to cater around it, or to rule said life and religion. She actually was the first person I saw take the enneagram numbers and put religious spins on them.

And that got me thinking, if each enneagram had "life verses" what might they be? What could my life verse be according to my type(s). I need to say, these are always just suggestions, but it's really fun to see if these verses, or other fun graphics, resonate with the types in any way. So, it is very safe to say that this is all in just good clean fun!

Some resources I have used to learn more about the enneagram: The Road Back to You

VERSES

WHat is your enneagram number? Also, this post will contain links to our etsy shop, which proceeds do go to us.

While my intro may have been a bit dramatic, it is totally true.

Journaling has played a major part in my life; it has helped me through some of the darkest times of my adult life, and I honestly couldn't be more grateful.

I will warn you, the passion I have developed for journaling has turned into a huge problem. I am highly addicted to journals, notebooks and pens. I guess that is why I started making my own! (Check them out here!)

BACK STORY

To understand my why, you need to know a little bit more of my backstory.

I got married at twenty-two years old. Do I feel like that is too young? No. Do I feel like I was ready? Yes/No. Not because I married the wrong person, because that is hardly the case, but because I had no clue what it was like to be a wife, to be married to a traveling man. When J and I got married, he traveled twenty-eight-ish days out of the month! THE MONTH! And I worked night shift, so there were months where we didn't see each other. I had no clue how to be a wife to him, be away from my parents so much, or to manage a house hold basically on my own. Also, since I worked all the time, I had very few friends. This is kind of where I allowed myself to slip into some depression. I mean how could I not? Talk about lonely!

Well, he came off the road, and within six to nine months, we were expecting our first baby! I was so excited. Excited to have a baby with my husband, excited to start a God given family. I felt like life was moving as it should.

With that first baby came the baby-blues and some post partum anxiety. I constantly beat myself up over the fact that we had to have emergency C-section, that nursing didn't go as planned. I let anxiety rule my life.

Then, SURPRISE. Our second baby was on the way! That pregnancy went by so fast, and ended with a scary experience with an almost three week NICU stay. A rollercoaster ride I wouldn't wish on anyone! I had never cried, leaned on my husband or God, ever before. The girls are eighteen months apart, to the day. From the NICU stay and various of scary incidents that my baby fought through and overcame, came tons more of anxiety and tons of post partum depression.

THEN, eleven months later, I went in for a routine wisdom tooth removal, and the oral surgeon broke my jaw. BROKE MY JAW. I said, what I said! That was truly a traumatizing event. I was literally wired shut on the spot, and was forced to eat, I mean DRINK a liquid diet. While that looks and sounds like a horrible experience, and it WAS. Good still came out of it.

Out of all of these life changing and scary events, good came out of each and every one.

And that in itself is a great lesson learned, and a humbling reminder. 1 Peter 4:12-19, the author, Peter instructs us to rejoice in suffering, so "that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed". I am also a firm believer, that if we can't find joy where were at, we won't be happy in our next venture.

When my jaw was broke, I literally had to write everything. Have you ever heard the old saying "alone in your thoughts, too much". That was me. So. Me. That's when I began journaling.

It started out with a pretty walmart journal, and a journaling prompt graphic I found on Pinterest. I did that for a bout a week or two, and then it turned into an everything journal. I used it for the prompts, and to talk to God. I filled this journal up, and then I began to dig back into His word, and reading more and more. I even began reading as a form of self care, not just religious books but personal development and even raunchy romance. Yes, I am that girl! :)

When I began journaling, I had such a peace in my spirit. Even if I was just journaling about my kids, I was getting stuff off my chest, off my heart and mind.

SUMMARY

With all that being said, it's easy to see that it was not just the journaling that pulled me out of the funk. It was all God. But, God gave me a way, the tools and the willingness to pull out of the bad place I was in.

Journaling gave me a place to kind of "protect my peace", so to speak. When I had a really bad day at my hospital job, I went to my journal. When I needed to get things off my mind, I went to my journal, even when I didn't know what it was I needed to say, the words have always found me; and if they didn't I used a journaling prompt, and they found me.

Journaling also gave me a place to leave lessons and wisdom for my babies. When my grandmother (dad's mom) was still living, my mom gifted her a journal. She asked Jane to write down whatever her heart lead her to write, and that she wanted it to be for me. I remember that journal like it was yesterday, while it has been over fifteen years since we gifted her that journal and almost six since she passed away, I have never gotten that journal. Am I a little bitter about it. Yes, a little. Only because I don't have much of her left. Some notes she wrote me, a necklace I gifted her right before she passed, and some books she gifted me is all I have. I would love to have that journal, and see what she wrote, and keep it safe. I hope my girls will cherish my journals and Bibles like I would Jane's journal, and I hope these journals and Bibles will give them some wisdom one day.

I HAVE A FREEBIE FOR YOU!

Are you ready to begin journaling?
