Hey Girl, Your Serving More Than Just "Bread and Cheese" | Bible Studies

This was one of my favorite stories to hear in Sunday school as a child, but, it honestly wasn't until now, that I learned how empowering it is not only for children, but to us as women, as moms, as working women, as women who have goals, who have dreams of doing something great in the lives of their own and others!

David delivered "Bread and Cheese"

In I Samuel 17-18, the Isrealites and Philistines were at war in the Valley of Elah, the Philistines had a mass weapon on their side- Goliath. A giant of the Philistines. Hearing the description of Goliath, you would think that the Isrealites had no chance. They probably felt that way, too, but they didn't know God's plan!

One day, David's father, Jesse, loaded David up with bread and cheese and told him to deliver these items to his brothers, who were fighting with Saul and the Isrealites. Jesse told David to take the bread and cheese to his brothers, and return to him with word on their safety.

David arrived in the valley, located his brothers, who were on the line of battle, checked in with them, as he was told. His brothers were hateful and condemned David for only coming to watch the war, all when David was doing what he was asked to do.

About that time, Goliath came out, and all the Isrealites ran. David asked his brothers who Goliath was. They explained to him and explained that Saul wanted him dead, and would reward the person who succeeded with various gifts for the warrior and his family.

Once again, David's brothers discouraged him and told him to go home. David turned to another person and they told him the same thing, that who ever killed Goliath would be rewarded by Saul.

David was sent to Saul, where Saul verified the rewards in killing Goliath. Saul didn't believe David could kill the giant, as he claimed he could. David was just a young boy! Saul was sure to let him know he was very doubtful.

David pushed on. Killing Saul with one stone and a slingshot! Here he was, arriving thinking that he was only delivering to his brothers, bread and cheese, but he ended up delivering the Isrealites out of danger. David was successful, because of God. Because, he didn't let his brothers or Saul convince him that he couldn't do it. David knew that this battle he walked into, wasn't his alone. God used David, God fought through David.

hey girl, you are not 'fighting' alone

Ever felt like your only delivering "bread and cheese" to your family, or even at work? Yea, me too. Someone told me a while ago, "bread and cheese" is delicious, girl!

And it is!

But, sometimes as moms, wives, and working women, we feel like "bread and cheese" is not doing a lot to help. We think we're not contributing enough to the finances, we are fearful that we are not raising our kids right, or worse, were not giving our children and our spouses or partners enough of us. Sometimes, many of us feel "stuck" in our positions, or our roles.

Guess what?

That's not how God sees it.
God sees it as He is "prepping" you for something bigger. He is laying out the ground work to use you in a special way. A special way for Him, for others, for you. God puts us where He wants us, where He knows that He can use us!

You may feel like all you do is take kids to school, feed and clothe them, and help them with homework. As moms, no.. as women, we tend to be the most judgmental on ourselves, especially if your personality is that of "an achiever". When we feel like we're not achieving our goals, or working towards them, we begin to beat ourselves up, making ourselves feel like we are not enough.

As if we have not beat ourselves up enough already, in comes the added pressure from society, our families, even! We show up, we do as were asked or told. We. Show. Up. We believe that we are doing a great job, doing the right thing, many of us tend to go above and beyond for our families and coworkers. All of this to only feel like it is not enough, or worse, we get treated horribly by someone who is supposed to encourage us, to support us.

Ouch! That really hurts. (Trust me- been there!)

This attack is of the enemy (Satan). It is so, unbelievably, common of the enemy to use someone your close to, to attack you, discouraging you. The enemy's goal is to "stop you in your tracts". The enemy aims to stop you, right before you reach success or victory! Usually. Look at David, Saul and David’s own brothers, attempted to discourage him all along the way. The enemy knows God has something great planned for you, that you can do great things... that is why, he will always try to discourage you, hoping that you quit.

Many times, people look at women and say, "Your just a woman", "Your just a mom", "Your just a secretary", “Your just so young”, you can insert just about any role that we as women can hold. It works. People like to condemn us, making us feel not enough. Most of us, at this point would just give up. We would be so discouraged, that we wouldn't even be able to use the tools that God is giving us, yet alone, realize that God is fighting this battle with us!

I challenge you today, to not give up. Be thankful for the place God has you in at the moment. Be thankful for the work He is doing in you. Be thankful for the good things you and Him are going to do together! And certainly, be encouraging to others, don't be the person that causes a loved one or coworker to give up on their "fight"!
