The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know.

Praying Correctly is Important

This is not to say that there is an incorrect way to pray, but there is way to pray more powerfully, to communicate to God and be good at it!

I myself atruggle with remembering to pray for certain things or people!

Even better, I will begin praying and run down a “rabbit trail” and forget what I was praying about! Worse- I will forget that I am praying and start something else!

To me, that is a problem. How am I effectively praying if I can’t even finish praying on the subject at hand? How can I be a powerful prayer warrior if I cannot be consistent?

The Solution

I have found a solution, for myself.

And it’s, working!

So, I want to share!

Its not a huge secret, but it is a method that truly works, for me and others.

Honestly, if it works for me, busy mom to two wild children, a husband who keeps me busy even when I am not working at my full time job and my side gigs (see? Busy. Girl.); I’m willing to bank on that it would probably work for you, too.

The method may not be for you, and it is completely okay if it is not.

Step ONE!

Picture
You will need to purchase a super cute journal, with lined pages. If you are like me and tend to write a lot, or have larger penmanship, spring for a larger journal- you will be glad you did.

Okay, so it doesn’t have to be super cute, but get one that you like, one that you are excited to use everyday. Anyone else get excited over new notebooks? Just me? Okay- moving on.

Confession time: My name is Amy, and I have an addiction to purchasing journals. And books. (Justin and Jesus both know my problems with books and journals, and they are helping me through them!!)

Now that I have let that secret out, I can move on with this post.

But, honestly, not without showing you some journals I have on my to be purchased list! (Hashtag TPlist) A TBP List is kind of like a TBR list, you know, a “To Be Read” list, but equally as important!

Also, if you live near an Ollie’s, always check out their journal section. You can get really, really cute journals for like $3! I mean who doesn’t love a cute journal at a good price!
Also, dig up or purchase your favorite pen, of any color! I typically use black ink or pencil (either good old, trusty, number two pencil, or my favorite- a fat mechanical pencil with the 0.7 lead. Best.).

You can spring for a highlighter of your favorite color, too. Try to stick with lighter colors, though. I don’t care for blues, or oranges in my journal; but I do like them in my Bible!

Step Two!

Create a plan.

Figure out how you are going to pray in this journal, do what works for you!

My personal way:
  1. On the first page of the day, I list as many things, in detail that I am grateful for! We are to thank Him all through out our prayers, some suggest at the end, but, the more you journal, the more you are going to be grateful for.
  2. If I didn’t fill up the grateful page, I still go to the next page. The reason for that is so I can add to the grateful list if needed! On the next page, I start my prayer. I typically do an outline style, it keeps me organized. I like organization. But, if I have a lot on my heart, you would see paragraphs. Lots of paragraphs.

I have seen some prayer warriors leave spaces in the margins to go back and date answered prayers.

I have seen people just go full on journal.

All that matter is that you use your prayer journal how it best works for you!

TIPS:

The highlighter- I use the highlighter to highlight thanks throughout the prayer section of my journal. Sometimes as we pray, thanks keep popping up, don’t overlook those as they are equally important as your initial set of thanks.
  • Pick a time each day to hold yourself accountable to get most of your prayer down in your journal. The good thing about the journal is you can come back to it all day long if you need to! There are days where I pause my workout and jot a few things down, that way I don’t forget.
  • Embrace this prayer journey. This is your time with God, everyday. Use as much space in this journal per day, as you need. Write verses in this journal to stand on with your prayers. Wrote important dates down. Write memories that you are thankful for. Write. It. He wants to hear about it all.
  • Go back and read. Sometimes, we need to just sit, go back and read entries from a month ago. This lets us see how far we have come in our life, in our walk with God, and see what prayers have been answered, too.

Love the idea of a prayer journal, Amy! I did that several years ago and it was a blessing. It is such a good way to make sure we're spending that precious time in prayer and can be such a tremendous encouragement later on down the road as you look back and see all of the answered prayer and ways God grew your faith. Thank you for sharing!

Tabatha!
Thank you so much! I love my prayer journals, for so many reasons, one of which is being able to look back at things I have gone through, things I have prayed for, and things that He answered, or not answered, for that matter!
